In the fall of 2009, Londa B. started a not-for-profit organization, and appropriately named it, Mind Over Matter 2 Day. http://www.mindovermatter2day.com
Through personal and shared experiences, she witnessed how hard it was attaining and maintaining medication and therapy sessions at an affordable price; was an issue for many American's. She felt there had to be a better way to attain quality and respectful, mental health care. The activist/author was appalled with the price of medications, when she, herself, received a diagnosed of bipolar disorder January 2008. Had it not been for a great insurance plan she was afforded; she knew she would be one of the many contemplating her mental health care over other necessities (bills, food and other financial obligations) of life.
"Why should people have to decide if they should pay bills, purchase groceries, or re-fill their prescriptions? I am an American Citizen, but there are times where it sure as hell does not feel like it when it comes to healthcare! Can someone tell me when the next plane to Canada takes off?" the author queries while candidly joking at the very same issue that literally tears her heart apart. "Mind over Matter 2 Day, proves that the mind, reigns over all the matter one may have in his or her life. People have power and control over the way they think! Great mental health is so necessary. I feel like we have lost many brothers and sisters in the African American community; because people are afraid to ask for the help. The stigmas that lace our community are a threat to our future and wellness. Most diseases residing within the AA community are ones which are preventable with diet and exercise! We can WIN! We can do it! We just need to understand how to do so.
Mental health illnesses can be handled successfully with JESUS, medication, meditation, prayer, friends, family, good diet, exercise, and a good psychologist and therapist! The psychiatrist and therapist are not there to judge the patient. Trust me, they have heard it all! What helps the most is if people are honest. Honesty of your past and current life is helpful in evaluating your mental health. From there, they can create a plan to nurse your mind back to good health. Keep looking until you find the right professional to aid you. Ask friends, family, and your primary care physician for referrals."
I continue my mental health regimen until THE LORD, delivers me from this disease. As a Christain, I know God can do anything! Until deliverance, I will follow the advice of my doctor, take my medication, exercise, and eat right. In God's time, I will be set free! With that, I live in peace!
"Always make time to check-in with yourself, mentally speaking. With everything going on in the world today, many people face tremendous and stressful challenges. Have you been able to accept the recent lifestyle and financial changes in your life due to the economy? Are you depressed for days on end? Are you moody, or irritable? How about a loved one or a friend? How was your upbringing? Are you suppressing something? All of these questions are important. If there are issues, which may concern you, go online and take a confidential mental health assessment! After you take the test, if instructed to seek professional help, please do so!
